Ashley and Jon’s intimate backyard wedding in Salem, MA, was just so cool and so them. These two wanted a laid-back vibe and documentary-style photos that focused on real moments: family connections, genuine laughs, and the kind of interactions you only get when people haven’t seen each other in over a decade. One plan that didn’t quite pan out? Jon’s grandfather wasn’t feeling up to taking the couple lobster fishing for some photos. (Yes, lobster fishing—how cool would that have been?) But we improvised and still got some fantastic shots on his boat that felt just as meaningful.
The ceremony itself was held in the backyard of Jon’s grandfather’s house, which, fun fact, is the first ever duplex in the country. (You’re picturing something quaint and historic, right? You’re absolutely right.) It was the perfect spot for their vows, and I made sure to capture the day exactly as it happened—no forced poses, no awkward grins. Just pure, unfiltered love.
After the ceremony, we spent time in the backyard garden, which is a really special place for Ashley and Jon. It’s not just a beautiful setting—it’s something they’ve worked on together with Jon’s grandfather. Rows of tomatoes, fresh vegetables, and herbs (including some unique greens they’re particularly proud of) filled the space. It’s clear this garden is more than just a hobby for them; it’s a place that holds a lot of love and shared effort. Those quiet, candid moments in the garden made for some of my favorite photos of the day.
The evening wrapped up with the couple strolling through Salem for a bar crawl. Casual, fun, and very them. It was a day I won’t forget—and one I feel lucky to have captured in a way that truly tells their story.
