Finding a wedding venue that matches your vibe can be kinda really hard. There are a lot of traditional wedding venues out there, and after scrolling through ballroom after ballroom, they can all start to feel a little…factory wedding. More rinse and repeat and less “holy shit, this venue has a skull disco ball?!”
So if you’re looking for a unique wedding venue in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, or Connecticut that feels a little more you and a little less cookie-cutter wedding, here are six of our faves.
And if you need a non-traditional and unique wedding photographer who will let you and your personality shine on your wedding day, then hit us up!
Remnant Satellite – Somerville, MA
- Venue Type: Restaurant/bar wedding venue
- Guest Capacity: 110 standing, 35 seated
- Parking: Metered street parking available which is free after 6pm. Parking lot one block away on Boynton Street.
- Price: Starting at $100/hr rental fee
- Stay On-Site: Rent one, two, or all three Airbnbs above the restaurant for getting ready, overnight accommodations, or even an intimate ceremony space.
Why Remnant Satellite Is Perfect for a Non-Traditional Massachusetts Wedding
Remnant Satellite is a restaurant/bar first and not a traditional wedding venue. This comes with some pretty cool perks, though, like the food and drinks being out of this world and a tucked-away garden patio that makes you feel like you’re somewhere in Italy with a canopy of leaves and twinkly lights above you. The ambiance is super cozy, super dim, and there’s a built-in stage that can be used for a band or even your ceremony space.
The couple we photographed here rented all three Airbnbs above the restaurant, using them to stay the night before, for get ready, and to have their ceremony the day of. The ceremony itself took place in the exposed-brick living room with their closest friends and family gathered around. Afterwards, they served everyone drinks themselves before everyone headed downstairs to Remnant Satellite for a cocktail-style reception. The rest of the evening was spent mingling with friends, drinking, and eating some of the best food in Somerville. There was also a tarot reader that guests could take advantage of, which was such a fun addition to the day.
We shot mostly film with a few digital photos mixed in. This couple also didn’t want a dedicated couples’ portrait session (yes, it’s okay to do that!!!). Instead, they wanted to just hang out with their family and friends and actually celebrate their wedding day rather than spend time away from everyone taking photos.

Herb Lyceum– Groton, MA
What Makes This Massachusetts Wedding Venue Unique
- Venue Type: Greenhouse, historical home, garden, outdoorsy
- Guest capacity: Up to 175 guests
- Price: Starts at $85/guest
- Parking: Limited parking available
- Includes access to greenhouse, gardens, and grounds as well as day-of coordination
- Rent Birch and Stone historical home on the property for getting-ready space.
Herb Lyceum is privately owned, which means they’re not a wedding factory and can put more attention into each of their clients rather than churning out weddings every weekend. The cool part is that, like most of our unique venues, Herb Lyceum is really chill and relaxed. It also feels more intimate and backyard-weddingy even though it can accommodate a larger guest count. You have the option to have your ceremony in the garden, inside the greenhouse, or under a tent. The property also has an adjoining historic home that can be rented as a getting-ready space or for staying overnight for the weekend. The Birch and Stone home on the property there isn’t owned by Herb Lyceum, so you’ll have to check availability and rent it separately through their website (but do try; it’s an awesome house!). And the greenhouse reception is really freaking cool too.

Machines With Magnets– Pawtucket, RI

- Guest capacity: The venue and gallery can seat up to 120 guests
- Pricing: Weekend weddings during peak season start at $1,500
- Parking: Parking available on site
- Includes access to gallery, venue, patio, and getting-ready space at extra cost
Why Machines With Magnets Is One of Rhode Island’s Most Unique Wedding Venues
Because it’s a freaking art gallery! Every month or so, they change out the art for new artists, so your wedding will have a unique art curation based on whatever they have planned for that month. You never know what will be there on your wedding day. Machines With Magnets is a non-traditional wedding venue that’s mostly indoors, with the exception of the outdoor patio with greenery and twinkly lights.
The space is split between two large rooms, so guests can easily mingle between the two. There’s a sick disco skull hanging from the ceiling over the dance floor, a back area for getting ready with clown marionettes hanging from the bathroom ceiling, a clawfoot tub, a pinball machine, an old couch, vinyl records on shelves, and a random pair of mannequin legs. It’s our personal favorite venue, honestly. It’s fun, funky, artsy, and feels almost like you’re hanging out in a big grungey garage.

Okay Island– RI/CT line
- Venue Type: Greenhouse, modern barn, outdoorsy, country-industrial vibes
- Guest Capacity: seats up to 175 guests
- Price: starting price of $5000
- Parking: Parking on site
- Includes access to entire venue, including use of greenhouse, outdoor space, and getting-ready areas for both bride and groom
Why Okay Island Is Our Favorite for Unique Connecticut Weddings
Adam bought Okay Island during COVID and built the greenhouse and barn addition himself, which already gives the whole place a pretty unique feel. There’s a getting-ready space for the girls with a deck overlooking the outdoor ceremony space, while the guys’ getting-ready spot is a short walk through the woods, where a Winnebago awaits them.
The whole atmosphere is really relaxed and doesn’t feel like a factory wedding venue. Adam is around if anything is needed, and the day-of coordinator is super laid-back and artsy. They genuinely want you to have an amazing time at your wedding. The outdoor space is perfect for cocktail hour, with plenty of room for an outdoor bar, and there’s a massive bonfire at the end of the night. All around, it feels more like a really chill hangout with all your favorite people than a stuffy venue full of rules (are there any rules there, come to think of it?). It feels homey, like you’re having a backyard party at your friend’s house, which is exactly what makes Okay Island so freaking cool.

Saloon with Rockwell Theater access – Somerville, MA
What Makes This Massachusetts Wedding Venue Different
Saloon is another bar/restaurant in Somerville that can double as a really cozy wedding venue. It can only seat a small number of guests, though, so we’d say it’s probably best suited for intimate weddings. Saloon and Rockwell Theater share the same entrance and a hallway, so you can actually rent both spaces at the same time, which gives you a lot more room to work with. Rockwell Theater is super grungy and unique, and the getting-ready space is actually the theater’s changing rooms, complete with mirrors framed with those cool little globe lights.
The bathroom is the spot to be, though, because the walls are completely covered in graffiti and random notes from people who’ve been there. Our couple themselves added their names and wedding date to the wall, so in 200 years, someone enjoying a pee will see their names surrounded by a heart XD! The whole space gives you the chance to have a wedding that feels totally non-traditional and actually feels like you. There’s also an small, cozy theater with auditorium seating and a stage that you could use for your ceremony, reception, or even a band.
